Outdoor Educational Environment CentresThe State Award Operating Authority has funded six Outdoor Environmental Education Centres (OEECs) to offer subsidised adventurous journeys accessible to all Award Units across Queensland. New Award Units in particular are encouraged to access this opportunity, which supports completion of the adventurous journey component of the Award for your participants. Please contact the OEEC directly
or as outlined above if you want to book an adventurous journey. Note
that most centres are busy and will book out quickly. For further information involving these opportunities please contact Kate Harrison at the Queensland SAOA via Qld.Award.Office@dete.qld.gov.au Southern Cross YachtingWe run weekend sailing courses every weekend on Moreton Bay which are ideal for 14 – 18 year old students working towards Duke of Edinburgh. The courses are held on board our 40’yachts with an accredited RYA sailing instructor running the course. The weekend courses are live aboard with a maximum of 5 students on board with the instructor. The courses commence at 9am on Saturday and return at 4pm on Sunday and include meals and accommodation on board and night sailing
At the end of the weekend the students will all receive an RYA log book which can be used at any RYA school though out the world to log miles towards RYA certificates. For those who may be interested in a career in sailing this can eventually lead to an RYA Yachtmaster which is a commercial qualification here in Australia and Europe.
The students will complete certificates accredited by the internationally recognised Royal Yachting Association. For beginners a RYA Start Yachting certificate is awarded at the completion of a weekend course. For those who wish to continue another 2 weekends will result in an RYA Competent Crew certificate. Some continue on and do a theory course which includes navigation, safety, weather and tides and then do another 3 weekends to complete a RYA Day Skipper certificate. We can offer the students the special price of $550/weekend or $1440 if they book for 3 weekends.
