Alternative Expeditions

You do not have to do bushwalking for your expedition section - there are alternatives. As we find out about these we can let you know here...

Award Office Bronze Expedition - 2021

In anticipation of the current lockdown being lifted and no further restrictions being placed on South East Queensland, the Queensland State Award Operating Authority (AOA) is preparing to facilitate three overnight Adventurous Journey Expeditions (AJs) during the upcoming September holidays. These journeys will suit the respective Award level participants of the Duke of Ed Award and Bridge Award as outlined below.

These AJs are to support the Award Community by:

  1. Targeting young people with limited choices for their AJ. The office receives notifications regularly about award participants who may, for example, have shifted school, moved to Qld from interstate, or who missed the (AJ) organised by their Award Centre for whatever reason.

  1. Offering an opportunity for Adult volunteers currently undergoing outdoor leader training to participate in hands-on expeditions under the guidance of outdoor Adventurous Journey Supervisor/s (AJS), as well as for existing AJ Supervisors to share techniques in a “team teaching” situation.

Further information will be forwarded in mid-August to the relevant groups of those expressing interest in each AJ.

Please note that numbers are limited and preference will be given on a first in basis to participants assessed as having limited options to participate in an adventurous journey with their own Award Centre, and as outlined below for the Gold/Silver Canoe/Hike.

If you are an interested Award participant or adult volunteer please email the AOA at qld.award.office@qed.qld.gov.au , with your Award Leader copied in, as soon as possible. Places will be allocated around the time of the initial planning meeting for each AJ.

* The AOA does not have any expedition equipment. All participants will be asked to BYO their own bushwalking gear, or borrow what they need locally. Please discuss with the AOA if you require support with this.

Southern Cross Yachting

We run weekend sailing courses every weekend on Moreton Bay which are ideal for 14 – 18 year old students working towards Duke of Edinburgh. The courses are held on board our 40’yachts with an accredited RYA sailing instructor running the course. The weekend courses are live aboard with a maximum of 5 students on board with the instructor. The courses commence at 9am on Saturday and return at 4pm on Sunday and include meals and accommodation on board and night sailing

At the end of the weekend the students will all receive an RYA log book which can be used at any RYA school though out the world to log miles towards RYA certificates. For those who may be interested in a career in sailing this can eventually lead to an RYA Yachtmaster which is a commercial qualification here in Australia and Europe.

The students will complete certificates accredited by the internationally recognised Royal Yachting Association. For beginners a RYA Start Yachting certificate is awarded at the completion of a weekend course. For those who wish to continue another 2 weekends will result in an RYA Competent Crew certificate.

Some continue on and do a theory course which includes navigation, safety, weather and tides and then do another 3 weekends to complete a RYA Day Skipper certificate.

We can offer the students the special price of $550/weekend or $1440 if they book for 3 weekends.
